The Master of International Business provides you with a solid grounding in the foundations of management and strategic thinking in international market operations. Subjects provide you with an understanding of how operating across borders impacts on functional areas (such as marketing, accounting, finance and HRM). You will develop an awareness of policies governing the world trade and investment system, with an emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region.

The course is open to students with a previous degree in any discipline, and is normally completed in 18 months of full-time study or three years part time.

This course is for graduates from any discipline who wish to establish a management career in international business, and who aim to develop an awareness of the policies governing the world trade and investment system.

Exit points

If you enrol in the Master of International Business and are either unable or choose not to continue with your studies, may be eligible to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate in International Business. Minimum entry requirements

To be considered for admission to the Master of International Business, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline, or equivalent
  • Results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), unless the applicant has met one of the approved conditions for a GMAT/GRE exemption. Find out more about the GMAT/GRE.

Course structure and subjects

The program is made up of six compulsory subjects and six electives. The compulsory subjects cover two strategy subjects, HQ-subsidiary relations, cross cultural management, supra-national regulation of the global economy and ethics. The electives are drawn form an extensive list of subjects offered by the FBE, Arts and the Law School. These include international marketing, international HRM, Asian business and management, international financial management, and supply chain management.

Full time study: 4 subjects per semester
Part time study: 2 subjects per semester

Each subject involves doing three contact hours on campus (lectures, seminars, tutorials), and it is recommended that you do an additional 5 - 7 hours of independent study per week per subject.

Evening classes normally commence at 6.15pm and are held at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus. The majority of core subjects are offered both during the day and the evening; depending on availability of elective subjects you may be required to attend a day time class at some point in your enrolment. Some subjects are available on an intensive basis and these may involve day or weekend classes.
