Accounting

Accounting in today’s business world is extremely sophisticated. An accountant is a strategic adviser and business partner who must have a good understanding of business issues and processes, as well as the skills necessary for sound decision-making. Accounting studies will equip you to understand the financial structure of an organisation, and produce and analyse financial information.

Accounting programs offered through the GSBE aim to meet the changing demands of industry and the profession. Accounting, business analysis and business systems skills are the cornerstone of business in the 21st century. Graduate accounting programs provide the opportunity for students to specialise in one of these major areas while also taking electives that will help them understand the total picture. Armed with theoretical and practical training from award-winning lecturers, graduates are able to demonstrate advanced critical and strategic thinking skills for business and apply technical and analytical skills to address specific accounting and business system issues.

The accountant’s role encompasses the provision of broad-ranging business advice. Our students are highly sought-after, and enjoy a variety of career options after graduation. While many go on to join one of the Big Four accounting firms, there are those who go into banking, government, private practice or industry. Accountants are in demand internationally, and our graduates are able to work overseas with the knowledge that their qualifications are recognised wherever they go.

Studying accounting at a graduate level has opened alternative career pathways that I once would not have considered. My diverse background means I have a unique skill set, which was looked upon favourably when I applied for graduate> positions. In March 2010, I will commence as a graduate in Deloitte’s Corporate Restructuring Group. At Deloitte, I can pursue my interest in designing innovative solutions to help financially distressed businesses.
