Economics
Economics provides skills in problem solving for business and government. It examines ways to understand what happens in markets, the performance of national economies, and approaches for analysing and interpreting data. Ultimately, the role of economics is to enable you to make better decisions about the many types of problems that you will confront in the commercial world or in government.
The demand for economists is growing in both the private and public sectors as concern increases over sustainable development, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, the current-account balance and microeconomic reform. Economics graduates from the GSBE are highly sought-after, and move on to employment in government, financial institutions, academic institutions, international consulting agencies, industry, and more. You will receive up-to-the- minute training in a wide range of economics subjects, allowing you to tailor your studies according to your interests.
Careers in Economics
Career opportunities for professional economists are strongest in the government sector such as Treasury or the Reserve Bank. Other strong sectors include financial institutions, insurance companies, large business firms and not-for-profit organisations. Many business firms and government departments offer administration and marketing roles to graduates who have trained as economists. There are an increasing number of positions for work in pure and applied economics for which a qualification such as the Master of Economics is well-suited.
The analytical skills developed through the study of economics are valuable in many roles besides that of the professional economist. Economics is integral to managerial roles in public administration and the not-for-profit sector, especially in areas of welfare, health and social policy. Such roles require the analysis and interpretation of economic data as well as policy analysis and development. Sound knowledge of the key concepts and techniques in economics
are essential to successful performance in such areas.
