Management

Effective management enables businesses and organisations to achieve their goals. Management is more than just the leadership and control exercised by senior executives. Management skills are practised by people in all roles and are valuable at every stage of your career, equipping you to work effectively with people and processes within organisations of all sizes and types. These skills rely on a sound knowledge of the internal and external functioning of organisations, and where they stand in a changing competitive and social environment.

To fulfil their responsibilities successfully, managers need specialised knowledge. They need to know what makes organisations successful, and how to analyse, manage and improve performance in a range of organisational areas. Management programs at the GSBE offer a high quality education that will provide students with the knowledge and capabilities to build successful careers and become effective leaders in business, government and not-for-profit organisations. Our graduates are exposed to academic research and its practical application, and enter the marketplace knowing how to use research findings to add value to their professional practices.

Careers in Management

The career options available to management graduates are varied and can be generalist or specific in nature. Generalist career opportunities can include graduate entry programs at organisations around the world, or even entrepreneurial pursuits in the industry of your choice.

Specific career opportunities include positions in organisational development, change management, strategic management, management consulting, and training and development in business, government and voluntary sector organisations. This is also useful for managers as they go on to become General Managers and Chief Executives. Students who are more interested in international business can build careers with international roles or overseas placements in Australian and international corporations, government departments, multi-lateral organisations like the WTO and World Bank, and international aid organisations. Students pursuing studies in operations management are able to become project managers or run manufacturing or service operations in a variety of industries. Many Operations Managers go on to careers as General Managers and Chief Executives.
