James Tonkin

By making the most of everything offered at the GSBE, you create more opportunities for yourself – both professionally and socially. I got my current job through the Graduate Careers Centre. It was fantastic having a “foot in the door” to popular industries, and their assistance made interview preparation much easier.

Going overseas has improved my ability to adapt to new business and cultural situations and has enhanced my understanding of the Malaysian business world. I think that these acquired capabilities are very valuable for my future career.

Global opportunities

The GSBE offers student exchange opportunities with leading business schools around the world. Going on exchange is an integral part of the course and provides students with an international perspective on their discipline, enhances cross cultural communication skills and develops key transferable skills keenly sought by employers. Whilst on exchange, you can earn credit towards your University of Melbourne degree, pay no additional tuition fees and receive scholarships to help with costs.

The Global Business Practicum (GBP) is a credit-based subject providing an in-country study experience.

The subject consists of a two-week work project undertaken in an overseas company, preceded by seminars on culture and business practices in the host country. Real work projects with a range of companies from various industries are offered including investment banks, insurance firms, engineering firms and HR consultancies. In small teams, students work together and present their project findings and recommendations to senior company representatives at the end of their placement. Destinations for the 2009 program include Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai.

Clubs and societies

We encourage you to be involved both on and off campus in leader-ship, community engagement and volunteering activities. These are a great way to develop transferable skills and interact with fellow students outside the classroom.

On-campus activities include:

  • Student societies
  • Mentoring programs
  • Student Host Program
  • Professional memberships
  • Internships
  • Volunteering
  • Networking events.

Being part of the association has added great value to my university experience and future career.
